ON THE FRONTLINES IN KIEV

Paris-based American photographer Tatiana Grigorenko, whose family has roots in both Russia and Ukraine, found herself in Ukraine just after the overthrow of President Viktor Yanukovych in February. The revolutionaries had refused to go home, instead staying on their barricades. Using a large-format view camera, Grigorenko captured some of sentinels standing frozen on the debris of the battle, in a time and place she calls a “liminal space,” where “after the fall of the old order and before the rise of a new one, anything is still possible.” Her exhibition “A Liminal Square: Portraits from Kiev,” is on view at the American University Fine Arts Gallery (6, rue du Colonel Combes, 75007 Paris; Mon.-Fri., 9am-7pm; Sat., 10am-5pm) through May 19.
