Suburban Jazz Hot

Marc Ribot, one of the featured artists at the 2005 Banlieues Bleues festival.

The French have a longstanding love affair with jazz, and Paris still has a number of fine jazz clubs featuring big international names and local favorites, but those seeking cutting-edge sounds are more likely to find them just outside the city in a couple of small suburban clubs that make an effort to program younger, more experimental groups: the popular Les Instants Chavirés, known for its experimental and improvisational bent, and Le Triton, a stylish, well-equipped club with a restaurant. Banlieues Bleues, a major jazz festival held in March and April that presents a wide variety of jazz styles, also takes place in a number of suburban venues. The Seine-Saint-Denis department, which has an active educational program called Jazz93 to promote jazz and assist musicians, stages concerts at the Triton.
