BELLY OF PARIS, OLD AND NEW

Baltard: Les Halles de Paris 1853-1973, Louvre des Antiquaires, Paris

“Vue des Halles” by Charles Marville.

“Baltard: Les Halles de Paris 1853-1973,” an exhibition of photos of the lamented “Belly of Paris,” the massive food market in the center of the city with their graceful wrought iron pavilions designed by Victor Baltard, now replaced by an underground shopping mall, trasport stations and garden, is being held at the Louvre des Antiquaires (2, place du Palais Royal, 75001 Paris; tel.: 01 42 97 27 27; free admission) through July 31. The show also presents the plans for the new look of Les Halles, with its overarching canopy, by competition winners Patrick Berger and Jacques Anziutti.
