TEMPLE OF TOURISM DESECRATED

The carefully piled skulls and other bones in Paris’s Catacombs, a popular tourism site, were violently attacked by vandals last weekend. The damage is so bad that the recently restored ossuary has been closed until further notice, in part because of fears that an avalanche of bones, which have been gathered here from overflowing Parisian cemeteries since the end of the 18th century, might bury visitors. The intruders may have entered through the passageways of the quarries crisscrossing Paris, which are frequented (illegally) by aficionados, ravers and the curious.
