Two major French literary prizes were awarded this week, bringing to an end the suspense that begins with the publication of hundreds of new French novels during the rentrée littéraire. The biggest of the big, the Goncourt, went to a woman for the first time since 1998: Marie NDiaye, the 2001 winner of the Prix Fémina, for Trois Femmes Puissantes (Three Strong Women, Gallimard), the highly praised story of three African women. Frédéric Beigbeder, who had been tipped to win, got the Prix Renaudot for Un Roman Français (Grasset), an autobiographical novel inspired by his arrest for cocaine possession.
