Lily Allen meets the Spice Girls (with lots of extra spice) in Les Vedettes (The Stars), a singing and dancing troupe of young Belgian woman who may dress up like over-the-hill majorettes but have a funky, modern edge. Like Allen’s, their songs, written by quirky auteur Philippe Katerine, tell it like it is: “Ta Vie Est Pourrie” (“Your Life Sucks”) has a catchy beat and tough lyrics, while “Joey Starr” recounts an erotic dream about the French rapper so good that it threatens a couple’s love life. Perfect summer spice music. We discovered Les Vedettes on our favorite French radio station, FIP.
