A Safe Bet for Rosé Season
In France, in the days before organic, natural and biodynamic wines became all the rage, if you brought a bottle of Mouton Cadet Bordeaux to a dinner party, the host or hostess was sure to nod approvingly and say that it was a “valeur süre.” A lower-priced assemblage of Bordeaux produced by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, it is a consistent, reliable red.
I only recently discovered that there is also a Mouton Cadet rosé, introduced in 2007. The 2015 has just been released, and I can vouch for the fact that it too is a valeur süre. At around €10 a bottle retail, it is not much more expensive than run-of-the-mill rosé, and now that the pink wine has become the go-to summer tipple of the French, you can be sure your host or hostess will nod approvingly once again if you show up with a bottle in hand for lunch or a picnic.
